Rising pop star, Billie Eilish, is coming for us with her latest single, “bury a friend”. While announcing the release of her upcoming debut album which has no official date yet, the singer also revealed the artwork for her upcoming album, “WHILE WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?” which features her in an eerie pose, wearing a simple white t-shirt while sitting on a white bed in a dark (black) background.

A follow-up single after “you could see me in a crown” and “when the party’s over”, “bury a friend” is basically a simple track with minimal trap-like beats. Regardless, the vocal layers in the song are a perfect fit to deliver the deep lyrics with minimal instruments in the background. Eilish is known for her bizarre artistry and experimental sound, and this song is no exception to that style.

The song itself was released together with a similarly bizarre music video (warning, the MV consists of flashy lightings, with fast transitions from dark to light). Directed by Michael Chaves, the music video shows Eilish in white attire and seemingly coming from under the bed of a sleeping man. The other scene shows her with lots of injection needles on her back.

The lyrics from the song was telling Eilish’s struggle in battling depression and she depicted herself as a monster who hides under the bed—as seen in the music video. Her fascination for horror movie was also a clear inspiration for the visual art of the song.

Billie Eilish really is one artist to watch in 2019, with her 17 track debut album coming out later this year. “bury a friend” is a perfect heads up to the album.

Score: 7 out of 10
