Emo is a rock genre portrayed by an emphasis on emotional expression, sometimes through confessional lyrics. It was a subgenre of punk rock music that appeared in Washington, DC in the mid-1980s. Often, the singers of these bands would sing about depression, drug use, and societal problems. Rite Of Spring (as a pioneer of the emo subculture) launched the subgenre when they moved away from punk scene and they put the focus of their music and lyrics on personal pain and suffering. These days, when people hear the word “emo”, they usually remember the likes of My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, Paramore, and Mayday Parade.
